History Shorter College is a two-year, private, coed, liberal arts college affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. SC was founded in 1886 as a four-year institution under the name Bethel University. In 1903 the name changed to Shorter College. It became a two-year college in 1955. Shorter College forms part of a cooperative center with Arkansas Baptist and Philander Smith Colleges in sharing resources and programs. Shorter is an open-admission school that believes everyone should have an opportunity to pursue higher education and to develop to their full potential. To this end, Shorter provides a liberal arts education leading to career degrees or liberal arts transfer degrees.

Athletic Program Quality students are looking for a college with an outstanding academic program, but they are also looking for a college, which provides opportunities to balance study and intellectual pursuits with recreation, physical activity and athletic competition. Shorter College met these needs in 1994 with the construction of the Winthrop-King Centre, a 64,000 square foot facility, the finest in the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Athletic Conference. Featured in the building are: Indoor Running Track Classrooms Racquetball Courts Locker Rooms Weight Room Office Suites for Coaches Concession stand Aerobics studio Training Room Laundry Facilities Basketball and Volleyball Courts for intercollegiate competition, two intramural basketball courts and retractable seating for over 1500 spectators. Shorter is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division1 and the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC)
