Location Located in the city of Columbia, Allen University is eight blocks from the downtown area. The eight-building campus is located on approximately 23 acres. The facilities were built between 1906 and 1950. The U.S. Department of Interior designated five of its buildings with the Historic District Status. The campus is easily accessible from the highway, railway, and airway systems. Benedict College, a traditional black college, is within minutes of the campus. The city of Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, has a population of approximately 100,000. Points of interest include the Columbia Museum of Art, the Hampton-Presston Mansion and Garden, the Planetarium, the Riverbanks Zoological Park, and the South Carolina State Museum and State House.
History Allen University is a four-year, private, coed liberal arts institution, founded in 1870 as Payne Institute by the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. In 1880, the school reopened under the name Allen University in honor of Richard Allen, founder of the AME Church. Founded to provide higher education in a Christian environment, the development of a wholesome approach to religion is one of the basic objectives of the school. The University provides an undergraduate education with a strong commitment to teaching, community service, and research. It continues to expand the curriculum to meet the demonstrated needs of society and students. Allen\'s sound liberal arts program prepares its students to meet the challenges of professional programs and careers.

Entrance Requirements Graduation from an accredited high school (or equivalent) and completion of the following units: 4 English, 2 mathematics, 2 science, and 3 social sciences; an official high school transcript; recommendations from high school counselor and minister (or other character reference); completed health form including recent immunizations. A $10 application fee is required. Admission Application Deadline: Continuous until August 15.
Graduation Requirements A minimum of 120 semester hours and completion of 62 core requirements to include: 15 English, 9 mathematics, 8 science, 12 social science, and 6 foreign language; minimum 2.0 GPA; minimum of C in English 101 and 102; last 30 hours in residence at Allen; student must pass the English Proficiency Exam.

Student Life Campus Regulations: New students and transfers must attend college orientation; class attendance mandatory; freshmen/sophomores required to attend weekly assembly programs; all students must attend Opening Convocation and Founder\'s Day; last 30 hours must be in residence; all vehicles must be registered; off-campus residence permitted. Campus Services: Health services; personal and psychological counseling; grounds patrolled by qualified security; remedial instruction available; religious and vesper services available. Campus Activities: Student activities include weekly assemblies that focus on worship. Students may get involved in the student-run newspaper. Leadership opportunities are found in the Student Government Association (SGA) or other academic, social, and religious clubs. Greek fraternities include Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma; sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. Honor societies are also represented on campus.
